Only once per year, WaniKani does a sale. As you probably guessed, that time is upon us. Between now and , you can get $100 off a WaniKani Lifetime membership. After that? See you in another year, I suppose.
No recurring payments. Take as long as you’d like to finish. Life gets in the way, and all that. Learning so many kanji and vocabulary–not to mention the Japanese language–won’t happen in minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months. It takes a year or two, maybe more, for most to make significant advancement. That’s why the Lifetime Sale can be such a good deal: you get the time you need to make progress in your Japanese, little-by-little, every. single. day. What you’ll be able to do with your Japanese in a year depends on what you’re regularly doing right now. So, lean into the everyday process and have faith that progress will follow.

We’re not sure if you’re the type of person to give in to social pressure but we’re sure going to give it our darndest try.
Of all the various Japanese programs I’ve used in the last two years and a half years, WaniKani is the one I’ve used the most by far.
Halfway through my WaniKani journey to level 60, I began to realize how remarkable the memory building process can be.
Now that I finished WaniKani I can easily read through manga and even most websites.
$199 US is a lot, but for serious language learners, you know this is actually a hell of a deal. The amount of money and time that the WK team has saved us all is amazing. […] this is seriously heaven for a language learner.
I now work in Japan. I see kanji every day, I write them every day. And, Wanikani taught me most of it.
Well I have finally submitted to the Crabigator unconditionally. Wait… What is this radiant light and warm feeling???
Asked Questions
How long’s the sale?
WaniKani Lifetime memberships are on sale from until .
When will the next sale be?
If the Cosmic Crabigator finally does take us away this year, this will be the last sale ever. Otherwise, the next sale will likely be in one year. We don’t do these very often.
What’s the discount?
Lifetime memberships are normally $299 (additional tax or VAT may be applied to the total at final checkout). During the sale they are $199 (before tax and VAT considerations). That’s a 33% discount for those keeping score at home.
I have a monthly / annual membership. Can I apply those payments to Lifetime?
If you currently have an active subscription that you paid with a credit card, then any unused time left on the subscription will be prorated and refunded automatically after purchasing Lifetime. The automatic refund will only work if you are upgrading to Lifetime with a credit card via our Stripe checkout page. The refund may take 5-10 business days, and will be credited back to the payment method you used for the last invoice of your recurring subscription.
What is a WaniKani Lifetime account?
WaniKani has three account types which give access to all premium features and content. They are monthly, annual, and Lifetime. As you can imagine, monthly and annual accounts are billed on a monthly or yearly basis. With Lifetime accounts, you only need to pay one time to have access to all current and future premium content.
Besides all the cult stuff, why do people upgrade to Lifetime?
It’s mostly for all the cult stuff, but there is a small minority who upgrade to Lifetime for other reasons. Here are some common ones:
If you’re not going at breakneck speed, it’s often cheaper in the long run.
It’s insurance in case “life gets in the way.” As you would know from all that life you’ve experienced, sometimes it does.
Guaranteed access to new content and features.
Even if you make it to Level 60, you still want to burn all those higher level items. In other words, completionism.
Getting that purple circle next to your avatar in the forums.
The crushing realization that language learning may literally be a lifelong endeavor.
I’m pretty new to WaniKani, should I get a Lifetime membership?
No! WaniKani is free for three levels by design! If you can, we highly recommend trying it out and getting to Level 3 before making such an important financial decision.
Can I buy Lifetime as a gift for someone else?
Sure, though we do need to arrange these manually. Send an email to hello@wanikani.com with some information about what you’d like to do and we’ll make it happen.
What will you do with all this Lifetime money?
Continue work on our beautiful, walled-in compound, to which only Lifetime members will be invited upon completion. Also, funding the development of our number one feature request: 99¢ incorrect review undo micro-transactions. We’re hoping to get these launched by April 1, 2026.
